About the Wild Oceans project

The Wild Oceans project at Cumbria Wildlife Trust aims to promote seafood sourced sustainably both locally and UK wide.

It is an 18 month project, funded by Local Food, beginning in April 2011.

The project has been developed to address the need for clear and concise information about the effects of unsustainably-sourced seafood on the marine environment. This subject ties in with the current issue of a lack of awareness over what seafood can be sourced from UK waters, how fish are caught, what the different fishing methods entail, how far fish has travelled to reach your plate and all of the other terms that you may have heard of:

Discarding? Overfishing? Trawling? Collapsing fish stocks? Farmed vs wild fish? Line caught? Longlining?

Confusing isn't it. Well our aim is to simplify all of this as much as possible to make your decisions at the fish counter or in a restaurant a heck of a lot easier. We will also demonstrate to you how easy and quick it is to cook fish; it's healthy too you know!

Ultimately we would like consumers and businesses to be well equipped with knowledge of Cumbrian maritime heritage, the seafood that our local waters have to offer and the benefits that shopping locally can offer both to fishermen and local economy, and to the marine environment.
